Billy Wilson McClard, long-time proprietor of McClard’s Drugs in Lafayette passed away on Wed., Feb. 15 at NHC Place Cool Springs in Franklin at the age of 91.

Funeral services for McClard are scheduled for Sat., Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. at Lafayette First Baptist Church, where McClard was a member, with services conducted by Reverend Eric S. Hinson.

Interment, with military honors, will follow in the Mt. Oilivet Cemetery on Lebanon Road in Nashville at 1:30 p.m. Visitation with the family will be held today from 4- 8 p.m. and Friday from noon to 8 p.m. at Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Lafayette. There will be no visitation prior to the service on Saturday morning.

In addition to operating McClard’s Drugs for 47 and a half years, McClard was a World War II veteran. He was on active duty during the invasion of Normandy in North France, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus 1 on June 7, 1944 as Medical Sergeant Chief of Section 673 with the 38th field artillery battalion. During the war, he went from Omaha Beach to Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, where his unit met up with the Russians when the Germans surrendered. He was honorably discharged on July 12, 1945.

A native of Macon County, McClard was the only child of the late Clarence and Nallie (Porter) McClard.

He graduated from Lafayette High School in Macon County and attended U.T. Junior College at Martin and Tennessee Tech before graduating from the University Of Tennessee College Of Pharmacy, where he was a member of the Kappa Psi Fraternity.

McClard served as Director of Citizens Bank and served on several committees from 1958-2005. He was Vice President of the Citizens Bancorp from 1986-2005. He was a charter member and former President of the Lafayette Rotary Club, former President of the Macon County U.T. Alumni Association, and former Director of Tri-County Electric Membership Co-op.

He was inducted into the Macon County Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his skills in the game of football. Anyone who knew “bill” knew he was an avid University of Tennessee sports fan.

McClard is survived by wife of 62 years, Jean McClard, daughter Cynthia Ann McClard and “beloved daughters” Jennie Smith Pegg and Laura Smith Hendrix.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Billy W. McClard Scholarship fund in the care of the Macon County Education Foundation or to Lafayette First Baptist Church. Donations can be made either directly or at Anderson & Son Funeral Home.
