Santa made an unexpected visit to the Macon County Times office late Saturday afternoon.

Santa was inside the office at 200 Times Avenue for about 20 minutes and seemed especially interested in the status of the Times’ annual Christmas letters.

The letters, addressed to Santa and written by children at area schools, are printed annually in the Times, per an agreement reached decades ago between the Times and Mr. Claus.

According to a red-nosed source familiar with Santa’s travel schedule, Santa just wanted to make sure he’d be receiving letters from area children again this year.

The source, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal from Dancer and Vixen, said Santa is a longtime reader of the Macon County Times and, in more recent years, maconcountytimes.com.

“Have I received any letters yet?” Santa asked Times managing editor Brad Gaskins.

“No comment,” Gaskins said as he left the building for a previously-scheduled event.

Santa then turned to Times reporters Deidre Wilson and Brian Bennett.

“Well,” Santa said, “have I received any letters yet?”

"Some of them," Wilson said.

"Some of them?" Santa asked.

"That's right," Wilson said. "We've already picked up letters from some of the area schools, but not all of them."

"I want letters from all of them," Santa countered.

“That’s why we had always planned for a second collection date,” Bennett spoke up and said.

“A second collection date?” Santa asked.

“That’s right,” Bennett said. “We’re going to be picking up letters from area schools again on Friday, December 11.”

“Wonderful,” Santa said. “So the collection process is still ongoing?”

“Yes, Santa, that’s correct,” Wilson said. “But Friday, December 11 is our final deadline to collect letters to appear in the paper.”

“Good news all around,” Santa said. “I always look forward to hearing what the children of Macon County want me to bring them for Christmas.”

After posing for a picture in front of the Times office, Santa walked to the back of the building where the red-nosed informant and others were waiting for him.
