The Red Boiling Springs 5th and 6th grade basketball teams opened up their 2012-2013 season this past Saturday, October 28 playing the Wildcats of Hermitage Springs. The girls’ game started slowly, as the RBS Lady Bulldogs could not stop the offense of the Lady Wildcats. The first quarter ended with a score of RBS Lady Bulldogs 0 and the Lady Wildcats 14.
With the start of the second quarter, the game slowed even more for both teams with the Lady Wildcats only scoring 4 points to the Lady Bulldogs 3. The half ended with the Lady Wildcats comfortably leading the Lady Bulldogs 18 to 3. However, the third quarter proved to be a different story for the tempo of the game. The Lady Bulldogs came out strong making a run outscoring the Lady Wildcats by 16 points. Lady Bulldog Kameron Clark had a great third quarter, scoring 10 of the 16 points. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Lady Bulldogs 19 and the Hermitage Springs Lady Wildcats 18.
With this back-and-forth game, the Wildcats dominated the 4th quarter. As the game was winding down, the Lady Bulldogs just couldn’t keep up with the offense. The Lady Wildcats scored 8 points to the Lady Bulldogs 0, making the final score of the game 26 to 19 with the Hermitage Springs Lady Wildcats winning. Scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were: #12 Kameron Clark with 10 points, #44 Keelan Arnett with 1, #32 Kailey Holland with 2, #13 Haley Davis with 2, and #00 Kennedy Fleming with 4.
In boys play, nerves (as well as being smaller in stature compared to the opposing team) seemed to play a big part in the RBS Bulldogs season opener. Much like the girls game, the RBS Bulldogs could not put a stop to the Wildcats offensive game. The first quarter ended with a score that left the Bulldogs trailing the Wildcats 14 to 0.
With second quarter play, the Bulldogs did a much better job with their defensive game only being outscored by 5 points. As the first half of the game came to a close, the Bulldogs were down with a score of 23 to 4. The Bulldogs came out the second half and their nerves seemed to have settled a bit. The Wildcats once again dominated the Bulldogs leaving the score at the end of the third quarter 35 to 9. During fourth quarter play, the Bulldogs went on a run, scoring a total of 10 points, the most points they had scored in any quarter. The game ended with the Bulldogs not being able to hang on. The final score was the Hermitage Springs Wildcats 37 and the RBS Bulldogs 19.
RBS Bulldogs Head Coach Danny McCaleb said the loss was sustained due to the fact of being outplayed and not being able to score under the basket. “We looked good on the boards, we just couldn’t answer to the Wildcats inside game”, said Coach McCaleb. Individual scoring for the Bulldogs was #15 Hunter Kirk with 2, #12 Matthew Murphy scoring big for the Bulldogs with a total of 9 points, #23 Tyler Humes with 2, #21 Dylan Gross with 2, #2 Justin Woods with 2, and rounding out the score was #3 Caleb Chapman with 2.
The RBS Lady Bulldogs’ and Bulldogs’ next game will be Saturday, November 10, as they take on Hartsville at RBS. Game time is at 10:00 AM.
