Daniel Wayne McCormick has been charged with multiple counts in connection with a high-speed pursuit with local law enforcement officials in the late-night hours of Thursday, Oct. 8.

McCormick, 30, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of evading arrest and one count of reckless endangerment. Certified bond was set at $15,000.

McCormick, wanted in three states and two counties in Tennessee, was allegedly behind the wheel of a stolen black Chevy pickup truck as it led officers from the Lafayette Police Department and Macon County Sheriff’s Office on a high-speed chase along Highway 52.

Also removed from the vehicle and taken into custody were Kirton Ashley Walsh, 30, and Josie Lee McCormick, 29.

Walsh was not charged and was released at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Josie McCormick, the wife of Daniel McCormick, was not charged in the incident but remained in custody because she is wanted in Pennsylvania.

The incident began shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Officers from LPD engaged the vehicle, which refused to stop.

“Somewhere around 52 East out in the county my officers joined to help the Lafayette Police Department,” Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons said.

The truck eventually stopped in Red Boiling Springs near the Ambulance Service.

As officers approached the truck, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to pin LPD Officer Stacy Woodard between the truck and a patrol car.

Officers opened fire in an attempt to keep the vehicle from running down Officer Woodard.

The vehicle then attempted to run down Sheriff’s Deputy Joey Wilburn.

In the confusion, the vehicle managed to escape and began traveling back towards Lafayette.

That’s when Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Bartley proceeded to spin the vehicle out into the guard rail.

Deputy Bartley and Officer Woodard then pinned the vehicle against the guard rail to prevent it from escaping, and the suspects were removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.

Tennessee Highway Patrol arrived to work the accident, and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrived to investigate the incident.

Sheriff Gammons said he received a call last Friday, Oct. 9, from TBI agent Wayne Jackson.

“He advised me that the officers were found to have done no wrongdoing,” Sheriff Gammons said.

Sherriff Gammons said the officers are to be commended for their actions in protecting the public.

“They all did a good job,” he said.
