Atwell was The Chief of the Lafayette Fire Department for 25 years, as well as a beloved local figure and longtime city Councilman. He helped to found the local fire department, was a former President of the TN Fire Chief Association, served on the boards of several local organizations, and touched many lives.

“It’s a sad day,” said current Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs. “He was a good man. He did a lot for the fire service in Tennessee. He served our department for 25 years, from September of 74 to August of 99. He was chief the whole way. He hired me; I was just an 18 year old kid, didn’t know nothing about firefighting. He just took a chance. He was good to me.

“I’m here because of Mr. Atwell. He formed my whole career.”
