Mayor J.Y. Carter requested a moment of silence before the commencement of last week’s City Council meeting to remember the life of City Councilman Ronnie Krantz, who lost his nearly year-long battle with cancer on Sun., Nov. 1 at the age of 56.

Krantz served on the City Council since 2006.

“He was a knowledgeable councilman,” said Mayor Carter. “He was level-headed and tried to do what was best for the city.”

Annette Morgan, city recorder, echoes those sentiments.

“He was always really easy to work with and to talk to about city business. He always kept the city’s best interests in mind,” she said.

“He seemed like he enjoyed life and enjoyed his work. I could always depend on him.”

Krantz began his public service career in 1972 as a fire fighter for the City of Lafayette.

In addition to being a member of the City Council, Krantz served on the Lafayette police force for twelve years until his retirement as lieutenant in 2002.

As a law enforcement official for more than thirty years, Krantz also served as Red Boiling Springs Police Chief, Macon County Deputy Sheriff, Chief of Police in Gainesboro and Watertown, Chief Deputy of Clay County Sheriff’s Department, and a drug agent on the 15th Drug Task Force.

“He was a good policeman and a good councilman, said Lafayette Police Chief Jerry Dallas.

“Not only was he my double first cousin, but he was one of my closest friends.

“He was always a very active member of the community and tried to help everyone he could. He will be missed around the police station.”

Krantz’s last call could be heard over the police scanner.

“Sir go and rest in peace. You have earned it.”

He was interred at Macon County Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Krantz is survived by cousins Anne and Bobby Sewell, Sue Dallas, Judy Polston, Jerry and Neida Dallas, Bobby and Barbara Dallas, Jimmy and Wanetta Dallas, special niece, Stacy Dyer, devoted companion, Debbie Sadler, and many other cousins.

Krantz’s position on the city council will remain vacant until the next election in May.
