After a presentation by Senior Citizens Center representative Dennis Wolford, the Lafayette City Council awarded the center $5,000.
Wolford asked for $10,000 to help the center meet its budget for the year. He also pointed out that Sept. 2 was the one-year anniversary of moving into the current facility.
He said when they moved in, the center had 247 members and now boasts 760 members, as of July 31.
“One in four citizens in Lafayette are senior citizens,” he said. “One in five in Macon County qualify as senior citizens.”
In the discussion, Mayor James Y. Carter pointed out that the city is $47,205 behind last year’s sales tax collections. Council member Loryn Atwell expressed a desire to help the center, but also pointed out her concern for city employees, who were only getting a one percent raise this year, due to economic stress.
However, after one failed motion that was based on funding contingent upon action by the Red Boiling Springs city council, Richard Bransford moved to donate $5,000 to the center, and the motion carried unanimously.
