A Carrollton couple was in in Madison County Circuit Court facing retail theft charges.
Richard W. Behnen, 24, of Carrollton was charged with a felony charge of retail theft under $300 (second subsequent office) and Katie L. Gray, 22, of 907th St. in Carrollton was charged with a misdemeanor charge of retail theft in connection with the investigation.
According to a release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, March 17, at approximately 2:06 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office responded to Wal-Mart, 6660 Godfrey Road, Godfrey, in reference to a retail theft.
Deputies met with employees of Wal-Mart who allegedly witnessed Behnen place two electronic gaming remotes in the purse of a second female customer, Gray. The two subjects then attempted to leave the store but were stopped by store employees.
Both subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Madison County Jail, where Behnen was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. Behnen was eligible for the enhanced second subsequent felony offense, due to a 2010 conviction for burglary out of Madison County.
The warrant and criminal information on Behnen was issued by the Honorable Judge Neil Schroeder. Bond was set at $15,000.
