Barber faces drug charge

ALTON — An Alton barber was charged Thursday with a felony drug offense that goes back to an alleged cannabis sale last May 22 at a local barbershop.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged suspect Travis L. Smith, 33, of the 700 block of Oakwood Road in Alton, with unlawful delivery of cannabis. The offense is a Class 4 felony.
The warrant says Smith sold 10 to 30 grams of a substance containing cannabis to an undercover buyer.
Associate Judge Keith Jensen set a bond of $40,000.
Smith was not in police custody Friday.
Smith and fellow barber Charles A. Chapman Jr., owner of The Chat Room at 611 E. Broadway, were featured in an Aug. 21, 2013 article in The Telegraph after they cut the hair of 100 youths for free prior to start of the 2013-14 school year.
The event drew an appearance by Mayor Brant Walker.
At that time, Smith identified himself as owner of Street Cutz barber shop.
The alleged drug sale, though, happened at The Chat Room barbershop, said Pfc. Emily Hejna, public information officer at the Alton Police Department. Hejna could not say why the charge came nearly eight months after the alleged offense.
It also is unclear as to the relationship between Smith and The Chat Room, which is apparently closed. No one was at the business Friday morning and no one answered the telephone in the afternoon. According to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s website (http://www.idfpr.com), the agency suspended Chapman’s barber licence Dec. 12 for being more than 30 days delinquent in paying child support.
Smith’s license, though, still was valid Friday according to the department’s website. It expires July 31, 2015, unless the state takes action.
That state agency regulates barber shops that do not sell hair or other grooming products so neither Chapman nor Smith had to have an Alton business license, said City Treasurer Cindy Roth.
