For over two decades suicide has been the third leading cause of death for youth in the United States. Suicide is no respecter of persons, and it affects people of all religions, races, ages, and economic circumstances. Sadly, families are faced with this harsh reality too often. Dr. Kimberly Hale’s extensive research in suicidal behaviors of youth during her PhD program and the loss of a dear loved one to suicide has prompted her to partner with her brother, Isaac Swindle, in an effort to establish a nonprofit agency to provide supports to at-risk youth and opportunities to build community awareness and family supports.
Approximately one year ago, the Johns family suffered a great loss in losing a son, Gabe, to suicide. In his honor, they have worked diligently in sharing their story and raising money to help youth that are struggling. In order to support families of this community, the Johns family is donating the proceeds raised through the Gearin’ Up for Gabe Memorial 5K Run to assist Dr. Hale and Isaac in establishing the nonprofit.
They all believe that through a combined effort, we can help the youth of our community see HOPE in tomorrow.
