Duo charged for possession of meth and narcotics, and for public intoxication

On June 1st, 2014 CPL. Jeff Hix with the Lafayette Police Department was dispatched to the Dollar Store in Lafayette for an “unresponsive subject” call. Matthew Jones, age 32, had been discovered in the Dollar Store parking lot by the Manager, slumped over the steering wheel with the car door open.


The arrest affidavit states that upon arrival, Corporal Hix observed a male and a female standing outside a gold GrandAm. The suspects were identified as Matthew Jones and Chelsea Smith. CPL Hix noticed Jones was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech. While Hix was speaking with Jones, Smith went inside the Dollar Store. Hix asked Mr. Jones if he was on any type of narcotic and he stated no.


“I then asked Mr. Jones for his ID,” states Hix in the affidavit, “and he gave me a Dollar Store bag. I then asked Mr. Jones if there was any narcotics inside the vehicle and he stated no.”


When Hix searched the vehicle, a clear bag was found with a crystal substance inside which tested positive for Methamphetamine, as well as a bag with yellow pills believed to be Xanax, and a set of scales. Later a black bag with two syringes were also found.


When Ms. Smith returned to the vehicle, she also appeared to have slurred speach and to be unsteady on her feet.


The two were arrested and placed into custody immediately.


Chelsea Marie Smith, age 20, of 11100 Hwy 25 E Hartsville, was arrested on June 1st by J. Hix and charged with possession of Sch. II, possession of SCH III, possession of drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication. She is being held for a July 16 court date. Smith was also charged with criminal trespassing with a court date set for May 28th.


Matthew Lynn Jones, age 32, of 143 Carter Cir, Lafayette, was arrested on 6/1 by J. Hix and charged with possession of Sch. II, possession of SCH III, possession of drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication. He is being held for a July 16 court date. Jones was also charged with three counts of aggravated criminal trespassing.
