Board of Education meeting minutes

The Macon County Board of Education is met in regular session on Thursday, October 3. The following business was conducted:
The board approved minutes of the previous meeting, and consented the agenda.
Brenda Eller of Macon County Schools presented a statement to the board on the current school population, broken into grade level. The highest numbers at present are in the Pre-K, Kindergarten, 8th, and 9th grades. The total county school population is 3,796.
In old business:
The board approved the revision of Policy 4.6031 Criteria For Promotion and Retention on 2nd reading (changing year to 2013-14).
The board approved to accept a bid for a used modular building on a roll call vote, but not at the amount offered by the company. Maintenance Supervisor Randy Robinson was instructed to begin negotiations at $16,000 with an absolute limit of $20,000.
The board approved to accept a bid from NCSS for security cameras in four schools. The amount of the bid was $12,125. These cameras have been called for by SROs currently in place, as part of safety protocol.
In new business:
The board approved to elect Jeff Harper as Vice-Chairman for this year’s term, as Steve Walton serves as Chairman. Jimmy Cook, who would have been the next in line for this position, declined it. Harper, as Vice-Chair will step in when the Chair is not present, and will be next to serve as Board Chairman.
The board approved the revision of Policy 6.411 Student Wellness on 1st reading. The policy is now modeled on TSBA. The TSBA policy specified that an Advisory Council be in place, and the board specified in their motion that Coordinated School Health be asked whether there are plans to establish one.
The board approved the revision of Policy 3.404 Private Vehicles, to align with TSBA policy, on 1st reading.
The board approved Extended Learning Contract for the 13-14 school year. The Extended Learning Program in Macon County is primarily a remedial program for struggling students with before and after school tutoring.
The board approved the General Purpose Budget Amendment #1 for the 13-14 school year, on roll call vote.
The board tabled the revision Policy 6.317 Student Disciplinary Hearing Authority.
