Anthony Morgan announced and Nicky Howe from west Tennessee judged the Mule Show held August 5th, 2014 at the Macon County Fair. The offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, the mule is thought to exemplify hybrid vigor. Charles Darwin wrote, “The mule always appears to me a most surprising animal. That a hybrid should possess more reason, memory, obstinacy, social affection, powers of muscular endurance, and length of life than either of its parents, seems to indicate that art has here outdone nature.” (Darwin, Charles (1879) What Mr. Darwin Saw in His Voyage Round the World in the Ship ‘Beagle.’ New York: Harper & Bros.) Many enthusiasts of the breed believe that mules are smarter than either of their parents and thus more flexible in the kinds of work they can do. In either case, the mules on display at the fair on Saturday night were certainly a hoot to watch, especially the babies.
