MCHS Golf ends season on high note
The Macon County High Girl’s Golf season came to an end on Wednesday, October 2nd, at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester, TN, the site of the TSSAA Div. I A-AA State Tournament, with a second year in a row State Runner Up finish. Sullivan South from Knoxville won the State Tournament by an 8 stroke lead over Macon County.
“We are very proud of the girls and all they’ve accomplished over the past 8 years,” said coach Beverly Shoulders. “The girl’s team won Region 4 Tournament to advance to state play. Kaitlin Cartwright’s play was pretty inconsistent until tournament time. I’m proud of the way Kaitlin responded to the challenge of bringing her best game when it mattered the most, at tournament time.” Kaitlin finished with a 3rd place finish overall in the state tournament by shooting a total of 155 for the two days. Savannah Knight and Lauren Gammons finished in 17th and 18th place, shooting 169 and 170.
“This is a special group of young ladies,” said Shoulders. “We’ve been together since 5th and 6th grade with this one goal in common, winning the State Tournament. For the second year in a row, we came up short. But State Runner Up back to back years is something to be very proud of. Most teams never make it there, much less all four years of their high school career.”
Also advancing to the State Tournament was Larken Whittemore, a junior, on Macon County High’s boys team. Larken shot a 4 under par, 68, in Region play to advance.
“Larken had one of his best rounds of the year at the right time, during the Region Tournament,” said Shoulders. Larken shot a 76 on the first day of the State, but came back on the second day with an even par 72 to end his junior year with a 12th place finish in the tournament. “Both days, Larken struggled early in the round, but was able to keep his composure and grind back with some birdies to make a strong showing on the biggest stage of any high school athlete’s career, the State Championship.”
Macon County High boys, however, came up short of defending their 2012 State Champion title. The boy’s team lost in Region play to Notre Dame, Chattanooga.
Shoulders commented, “When it comes down to a one day 18 hole match with only one team advancing to the Big Dance, you’ve got to have a very good round, as a team. And as the game of golf goes, sometimes you just can’t get anything to fall. And that’s what happened to our boys team at the Region Tourney. We knew coming in to this new re-classification, that the Chattanooga teams were very good and that we would have to bring our best game on that day.
“We came up a few strokes shy of having the opportunity to repeat as State Champs. That was a very difficult day for all of our boys, our coaches, and parents. We knew that this loss marked the end of what had been a successful seven to eight year run of wins, and more importantly, the end of the closeness we all had as a TEAM. I can’t say enough about the heart of each and every boy and girl on this golf team.
“They represent Macon County High and our community with lots of pride character! And thats what it takes to be a Winner, the Heart to work day in and day out for something you love and are passionate about. I have never been more proud of such a great group of young student athletes. A special Thank you to our parents, the golf course and our community for the support given to our golf teams.”
