The Bulldogs played six games last week, three of them double-headers. On April 15th, they played a double-header against Watertown. They lost the first game 0-10 and the second game 0-11.
On April 17th, the Bulldogs played a double-header against Pickett County. They lost the first game 0-7. Brince Crouch was charged with the loss. He walked two, struck out two and allowed three runs in 2.03 innings. With a final score of 6-7, the Bulldogs were on the edge of victory in the second game. They took the lead in the second inning with a five-run rally, but Picket County’s three runs in the fifth clinched the game. Mason Hewitt took the loss. He walked four, struck out six and allowed four runs in just over three innings.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs were happy with their come-back in the second game. It was played against a perfect spring backdrop with clear skies and cooling temperatures and golden sunlight. For the first time this season, fans watched without benefit of a winter blanket to keep them warm. Everyone, including both teams, enjoyed a perfect night of baseball.
On April 18th, the Bulldogs played a double-header against Monterey. They won both games, with a 4-1 victory in the first and a 8-6 victory in the second. Chance Asberry was the winning pitcher in the first game. He struck out four, walked one, allowed three hits and no earned runs in five innings. The Bulldogs scored all four runs in the first inning. #5 Skylar Holden started things off with a single to third base. He stole second, advanced to third on #7 Cole Dziekiewicz’s walk to first and scored on a passed ball.
Dziekiewicz advanced to third and scored on #22 Brince Crouch’s single to center field. Crouch stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on #10 Nick Deckard’s single to short stop. Deckard advanced to second base on #14 Chance Asberry’s single to second, then stole third while Asberry stole second. Deckard scored on a fielder’s choice on #15 Alex Mullinix’s ground ball to short stop. Asberry was out at third.
The Bulldogs won the second game on April 18th 8-6. #7 Cole Dziekiewicz was the winning pitcher. He struck out five, walked four and allowed seven hits. A three-run homer by #22 Brince Crouch started things off in the first inning. In the second inning, on an error by Monterey’s second baseman, Red Boiling Springs #20 Dustin Bergdorff reached first with the ball in play. #3 Spencer Tuck reached first on a fielder’s choice to second base. Bergdorff was out at second. Tuck stole second, again with the ball in play, then advanced to third on #1 Justin Bergdorff’s double to center field. Tuck scored on a dropped ball by Monterey’s catcher. #7 Cole Dziekiewicz reached first on an error and third on a double to left field by #22 Brince Crouch. Justin Bergdorff scored on the play. Dziekiewicz and Crouch scored on #10 Nick Deckard’s double to right field, bringing the end to a four-run rally in the second inning.
The Bulldogs scored their final two runs in the fourth inning. #7 Cole Dziekiewicz doubled to left field and advanced to third on a single by #15 Alex Mullinix. #22 Brince Crouch got to first on an error. #20 Dustin Bergdorff was hit by a pitch and made it to first, advancing Crouch to third and Mullinix to second. Dziekiewicz scored on the play. Crouch scored on the last play.
The Bulldogs will play the last five games of the regular season on April 21st against Clinton County, on April 22nd against Pickett County, on April 24th against Clarkrange, and on April 25th and 28th against Monroe County.
