RBS High battles for the win

This weather! More games were cancelled than played in early January. However, Red Boiling Springs High is catching up with their schedule. They played Clay County on January 10, 2014. The Dawgs lost 26-51. The Lady Dawgs lost 42-45. On January 14th, Red Boiling Springs High School celebrated Homecoming and played top-rated Merrol Hyde. The boys lost by one point (39-40 ) in the final seconds of the game. The girls won 65-44. The Lady Dawgs lost 43-68 to Pickett County on January 16th and 38-70 to Jackson County on January 18th. I don’t have the game information for the boys for the last two games, but will report it next week. In the meantime, here’s what the Dawgs are up to.
January 10, 2014 RBSH v Clay County Boys 26-51 Girls 42-45
The Bulldogs took on Clay County on January 10, 2014. It was their second game against Clay County. The first was played early in the season, on November 26, 2013 and the Dawgs lost 49-60. They fared no better in the second game, losing 26-51. In that game, the Dawgs put 5 points on the board in the first quarter, 5 more in the second quarter, 6 in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth. #12 Brince Crouch and #21 Elijah Byfield each made 6 points in the game. #15 Alex Mullinix made 4. #11 Zane Roberts and #20 Skyler Holden made 3 each and #50 Dallas Greanead made 2.
The Lady Bulldogs also lost to Clay County, but it was a closer game. They lost by three points: 42-45. It was their second game against Clay County. They lost the first game 33-40 on November 26, 2013. In the game on January 10, the Lady Dawgs put 11 points on the board in the first quarter, 8 in the second, 10 in the third and 13 in the fourth. They made 8 of 29 two-point and 6 of 19 three-point field goals, 8 of 12 free-throws, 12 offensive and 16 defensive rebounds, 7 assists, 11 steals, 1 block, 20 turnovers and 16 fouls. #35 Mayson Burgener made 19 points. #45 Hannah Smith made 8. #10 Kelsey Jenkins made 6. #33 Cayley Tuck made 4. #12 Ashlyn Murphy made 3. #44 Lauren Henson made 2.
January 14, 2014 RBSH v Merrol Hyde Boys 39-40 Girls 65-44
After a Homecoming celebration on January 14, 2014, the Dawgs took on top-rated Merrol Hyde. The boys played a fierce game. They fought for every point. Down by almost half in the second quarter, they tied it up in the third, took the lead in the final three minutes of the game, then made a series of fouls which cost them the win. They lost by one point in the final 20 seconds. Throughout the game, tension in the gym was high on both sides of the court. Merrol Hyde fans who went for refreshments in the second quarter looked at the scoreboard in shock when they returned in the third. More than one RBS fan accused Merrol Hyde of intentionally tripping some of the RBS players and the Dawgs did seem to be on the floor more than was usual. But, the Dawgs were tough. They put 4 points on the board in the first quarter, 11 in the second, 16 in the third and 8 in the fourth. #20 Skyler Holden made 9 points. #12 Brince Crouch made 8. #11 Zane Roberts, #14 Chance Abserry and #25 Nick Deckard each made 6. #50 Dallas Greanead made 4.
The Lady Bulldogs hit the game hard. They put 15 points on the board in the first quarter, 17 in the second, 16 in the third and 17 in the fourth. Overall, they made 16 of 42 two-point and 8 of 19 three-point field goals, 9 of 12 free-throws, 8 offensive and 15 defensive rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 12 fouls. #45 Hannah Smith made 4 three’s. She turned the game around in the first quarter by sinking 3 three’s in a row. She made a total of 15 points in the game. #35 Mayson Burgener made 27. #10 Kelsey Jenkins and #25 McKinzie Hix made 6 points each. #14 Kaitlyn McCarter made 4. #40 Shaylee Ellington, #33 Cayley Tuck and #20 Abby Tuck each made 2 points. #12 Ashlyn Murphy made 1. It was great to see the girls on fire and the 65-44 win was well-deserved.
January 16, 2014 RBSH v Pickett County Girls 43-68
The Lady Bulldogs faced Pickett County for the second time this season on January 16th. They lost 43-68. They had a pick-up game with Pickett on December 19th, 2013, which they also lost, 39-55. In the later game, they made 10 points in the first quarter, 12 in the second, 10 in the third and 11 in the fourth. #45 Hannah Smith, #25 McKinzie Hix and #35 Mayson Burgener each made 7 points in the game. #10 Kelsey Jenkins and #12 Ashlyn Murphy each made 5 points. #33 Cayley Tuck made 4 points. #52 Maggie Isenberg, #40 Shaylee Ellington, #20 Abby Tuck and #14 Kaitlyn McCarter made 2 each. Overall, the Lady Dawgs made 12 of 29 two-point and 3 of 10 three-point field goals, 10 of 19 free-throws, 3 offensive and 11 defensive rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 15 turnovers and 9 fouls.
January 18, 2014 RBSH v Jackson County Girls 38-70
The Lady Bulldogs played top-rated Jackson County on January 18th. They lost 38-70, but put up a good fight. They made 7 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 9 in the third and 9 in the fourth. They made only 3 of 27 two-point field goals and 5 of 10 three-point shots. They made 17 of 27 free-throws, 5 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds, 4 steals, 20 turnovers and 15 fouls. #10 Kelsey Jenkins made 10 points. #25 McKinzie Hix made 8. #45 Hannah Smith made 7, including 2 three’s, #35 Mayson Burgener made 5 points. #12 Ashlyn Murphy and #20 Abby Tuck each made 3, and #33 Cayley Tuck made 2.
