The Lafayette City Council approved the hire of a new City Attorney, replacing longtime City Attorney Jon Wells, during the July 1 City Council Meeting.

James D. White, Jr., whose practice is located in Celina, Tennessee, will receive a $1,000/month retainer fee for serving the city in this capacity. Appointed by City Mayor Richard Driver, he was unanimously approved by the council members.

Other business:

The council approved minutes of the June 3 and June 12 council meetings.

The council adopted Resolution 07-01-2014, authorizing an application for the Tennessee Municipal League insurance pool safety grant. This grant, if awarded, will match $2,000 of city money for safety items or training, for a total of $4,000.

The city approved an amendment on the budget for the square sidewalk project, adding $912.00 to the total budget for contractors Mid-TN Contracting. This brings the total budget for the project to $38,321.68.

Local insurance agent Phillip Matthews addressed the council on changes recently made to workers compensation laws in Tennessee.

After some discussion, the council voted to hire Kristie Talley as Office Cashier/Assistant Payroll Clerk for the city. She was hired at Level 5, and replaces outgoing clerk Gale Durham. She filled a full time position.

The city accepted a letter of resignation from Clint Purdue, Water Department meter reader.
