Two nurses were involved in an accident on Tuesday morning, when one of them—who works the night shift and was just getting off work—fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the center line on Hwy 52.

Eric Carver, 38-year-old Lafayette resident and nurse, was traveling east on Hwy 52 at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday when the accident occurred. Trooper Ed Crouch said that Carver fell asleep and his black 4-door Jeep traveled into the opposite lane of travel. Teresa Deering, also a nurse, was headed west on the highway.

“She got over as far as she could in the emergency lane,” said Crouch. “If she hadn’t been paying attention—whoo boy.”

Carver’s vehicle struck her GMC Envoy in a driver-to-driver impact, and she finally came to a rest against the guard rail further down the highway. His vehicle continued through a ditch and into the Frito Lay parking lot, leaving one wheel behind.

Both drivers sustained minor injuries. Deering was treated at the scene and Carver was taken by private vehicle to get checked out.
