Lafayette resident Jerry Greenway was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Union Camp Road Friday morning, April 4.
The accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Greenway was driving a white 1997 Cadillac westbound on Hwy 261. According to Trooper Justin Mote, he failed to maintain his lane of traffic, crossing the center line and continuing into the ditch on the eastbound lane. The vehicle struck a tree and came to a rest.
Greenway, age 65, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Jerry was born in Kansas City, MO; he moved to Macon County in 1975. He worked alongside Charlie Gregory and Jim Durham at the Macon County Times for the entirety of the 80’s. He returned to the paper in 2006, serving as Publisher and/or Editor until 2009. Greenway was also known for his local work as a carpenter and handyman.
Greenway was preceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by step-mother Dorothy Greenway of Lufkin, TX, wife Sally Greenway of Lafayette, TN, daughter Ellie Greenway (Kelvin Swiger) of Clarksville, TN, daughter Coree (Paul) Entwistle of Red Boiling Springs, TN and and grand-children Lulah and Levon.
A gathering to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. at his home on Boyd Road. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Heifer International (www.heifer.org/888.548.6437).
