Heartbeat Haven in Lafayette is partnering with the Duggars of the popular TLC show “19 Kids and Counting” to hold a fundraising event on November 4 called “Heartbeats for Life.”
Heartbeat Haven is a nonprofit pregnancy center that serves women in Macon, Trousdale, and Sumner Counties who are facing crisis or unexpected pregnancy. They provide free services such as Biblical counseling, clothing and supplies for baby and mother, pregnancy and parenting classes, adoption referrals, and more.
The “Heartbeats for Life” event will be held at Cornerstone Church in Madison, TN exactly one year before the controversial Tennessee Pro-life Amendment will be voted on in the November 2014 general election. The amendment, also known as Amendment 1, would allow lawmakers to require a waiting period prior to an abortion, place greater restrictions on later-term abortions and draft rules on what doctors are required to tell women prior to an abortion.
The “Heartbeat for Life” event will feature speakers Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, as well as Alveda King, Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece. Other special guest names have not been officially released. The event will feature an exclusive reception with the Duggars for Gold Ticket holders ($100 per ticket) featuring hors d’oeuvres and a book signing from 6:00-7:00 pm. The evening speakers, live music, and live auction will be from 7:00-9:00 pm, and Standard Tickets are $25.
The money raised will be used to purchase Heartbeat Haven’s current building location, at 205 Church Street. “We’re just renting it, and our lease is up this spring,” said Center Director Liz Baldwin. “We’re hoping we’re going to be able to purchase the building. So all the money raised is going directly to the purchase of our building.” The center needs $80,000 for this purchase.
Baldwin, who grew up in a large family nearby, said that the Duggars agreed to do the fundraiser as a special favor.
“They don’t normally do stuff like this, and they have a lot of requests every year,” said Baldwin. “But the Lord blessed us with favor and they offered to help us any way they could. We know them through the same home school program. I worked with their girls in Chicago for another ministry, and one of my good friends is the one who married Josh Duggar. We’ve hung out with them quite a bit.”
The Duggars, known for their pro-life stance, support Amendment 1 and will be keynote speakers for the event, and have thrown their full weight into supporting pro-life causes.
Michelle Duggar commented, “We are so excited to be coming to help kick off the push to get Amendment 1 passed. Since the extremely liberal state Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the state of Tennessee cannot put any regulations on abortion, Tennessee has become an abortion procedure destination.”
She continued, “Most states acknowledge the need to give women vital information about the seriousness of their decision before they take the life of their baby. Tennessee does not even require parental consent, counseling beforehand, having a waiting period to think about it, or have minimal clinical standards. Veterinarian clinics for animals in Tennessee have higher standards in health and safety laws than there are for the abortion clinics involving human life. We must join together and end the baby holocaust that is taking place right here in Tennessee!”
Former Arkansas State Rep. Jim Bob Duggar added, “We are asking the people of Tennessee to get behind and pass Amendment 1 which will allow the Tennessee state representatives and senators to establish basic laws to help protect women and their unborn babies. All proceeds raised at this event will be donated to Heartbeat Haven pregnancy center located in Lafayette, home of the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the state!”
The event will be held at 726 W. Old Hickory Blvd., Madison, TN. For more information and tickets, visit hearbeathaven.com.
