The Macon County Times hosted a giveaway contest last week, offering two free tickets to see Suzy Bogguss and a copy of her new CD of Merle Haggard classics. The winner of this contest was Lafayette employee Rick Fleming, with the following entry:
To Whom it May Concern,
I like Merle Haggard for what he has meant to country music. He helped to lay the foundation for other country artists like Toby Keith, George Strait and Alan Jackson as well as others. Although I am not old enough to remember when he first recorded his earlier music, I remember my dad singing his songs in the car, especially his “Okie from Muskogee,” which made number one on the charts the year I was born in 1969.
Although I may not agree with all of his political views and the lifestyle he had, his music was from the heart and is honestly and truly who he is. My favorite is a little later song called “That’s the Way Love Goes.” I appreciate what he has done and the love and effort he has put into his music. He is one of the last great country music artists of his day.
Rick and his wife enjoyed a good night out on Friday, February 7.
