Wal-Mart holds grand re-opening

Wal-Mart celebrated a Grand Re-Opening on Friday, August 15. Dozens of local dignitaries, store employees, and customers celebrated recent renovations unveiled by the store.Wal-Mart has been a part of the Lafayette community since Dec. 31, 1985. The Supercenter opened on Jan. 20, 2000 at its current location. The store has currently gone through an 11 week remodel, with changes including new paint, self checkouts and new shopping carts.Grant checks were also presented to the following organizations, Courageous Kids, Macon County Arts Council, and The Lafayette Little League. Other activities were offered throughout the day, including an Oreo stacking contest.

Macon County Junior High Volleyball Team participated in the Middle School Volleyball Tournament held at Cumberland University August 15th- 17th. The team came home as champs in their division. ‘Thorns on the Rose’ book signing

Rotary activity

At last week’s Rotary Club meeting, Tennessee Soapworks owner Matthew Starner regaled the club with the intricacies of the soap making process. Starner mixed, poured and cut a (pre-made) block of soap during his presentation to the club, while giving a brief overview of the history of his business. Tennessee Soapworks is located on the square in Lafayette. In other business, MCHS graduate Jackson Sircy received a $1000 scholarship from the club.

Winding Stairs mural goes up

The Macon County Arts Council celebrated its latest project Wednesday, watching North Central workers hang a 16 ft by 16 ft mural of Winding Stairs to the south side of the Lafayette Cinema building on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. The mural, painted by local artist Nancy Doss, was commissioned through a $5,000 grant awarded to the MCAC from the Community Foundation of Tennessee.
