The social is a project of the Dixon Springs Preservation Association. the Group was formed in 2002 with the intention of preserving the traditions and history of the small town. The group also decorates the graves of veterans, hosts an annual Christmas party, an annual Memorial Day weekend barbecue, and has conducted three home tours in the past.
This year’s ice cream social will be marked by the public unveiling of an antique banker’s cage purchased by the group to sit in the old bank building. All of the old ban’s original furnishings and lighting fixtures had been removed and destroyed over the years. The bank was built in 1910 and went bust in the 1930s. The group obtained the derelict old building in 2005 and has spent countless hours in cleaning, painting, and restoring the local landmark building.
The old teller’s cage is similar to the one that once stood in the lobby of the bank. Future plans for the building include more furnishings, restoration of the old fireplace mantle, and turning the building into a community center and archives for local history.
