The FSA Office along with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) are the two federal agencies that provide programs and other assistance through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Most of FSA’s programs are from laws passed and mandated by Congress.
The primary objective of FSA programs is to promote a stable and abundant food supply while conserving natural resources.
This is accomplished through the programs available at the FSA office including commodity programs, price support programs, loan program for lend ownership and operating loans, youth loans, emergency loans, conservation programs, Tobacco Transition Payment Programs, and numerous disaster programs covering such items as crop losses, pasture losses, livestock deaths from disaster events, and rehabilitating farmland damaged by natural disasters.
Macon County’s primary farming enterprises are beef cattle and tobacco production.
The most active programs recently for the farmers in the county include completing over 300 Direct and Counter Cyclical Program Contracts, compiling over 750 acreage reports, completing over 50 Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payment applications for the 2008 crop year, 200 applicants from the 2008 tornado, 75 applicants from the 2010 flood, and $2.7 million was disbursed in 2010 for the tobacco buyout program.
The Macon County FSA office is staffed by Kenny Cothron, Kim Carter, Lisa King and Tina Short.
The County Committee is seated with Marty Coley, Garrett Manion and Mike Jenkins, with Cathy White as the adviser.
