With just one exception, all of Macon County’s incumbent candidates were reelected on Thursday, Aug. 5.
Several ran unopposed while others faced stiff competition.
Several won by landslides while others edged out close victories.
Macon County Mayor Shelvy Linville was elected to a second four-year term.
Linville, running as an Independent, beat Democratic challenger Dean Sircy by 353 votes.
Linville received 2,510 votes to Sircy’s 2,117, with Independent candidate Malcolm Lane snagging 537 votes.
The sheriff’s race was more one-sided.
Incumbent Mark Gammons overwhelmingly beat Republican challenger and Red Boiling Springs Police Chief Terry Tuck.
Gammons was elected to a second term with 3,472 votes.
Tuck, who got 1,786 votes, approached Gammons after results were posted by the Macon County Election Commission.
Tuck shook Gammons’ hand and congratulated the sheriff for being reelected.
Melinda Ferguson has been registering deeds for 28 years. Voters decided she deserves another four years on the job.
She beat Dianne Cline 2,996 to 1,726. Chuck Wilmore got 490 votes.
County Trustee Diane Cook, Circuit Court Clerk Rick Gann and County Clerk James Ralph Howser won unopposed.
Two incumbent school board members were involved in closely contested races but emerged victorious.
Billy A. Wilmore (556 votes) beat Wayne Marsh (536) for School Board Districts 5, 8, 9 and 10.
Jimmy Cook (613 votes) beat Brian Long (523) for School Board Districts 6, 7, 12 and 19.
Two of five constable positions were contested, but both incumbents soundly beat their challengers.
Rick Noble (409 votes) beat Keith Crook (198) for Constable Districts 1, 2, 11 and 20.
Sammy Morgan (619 votes) beat Loyd Hix (345 votes) for Constable Districts 6, 7, 12 and 19.
Constables Barry Newberry (Districts 3, 4, 15 and 16), Tom Dallas (Districts 5, 8, 9 and 10) and David Gunter Sr. (Districts 13, 14, 17 and 18) won unopposed.
Billy West was the lone incumbent to lose.
In the race for County Commissioner District 5, Todd Doss beat West 120-102.
Eight incumbent commissioners won unopposed: Jeff Hughes (District 4), Phillip Snow (District 6), Jerry Ray (District 7), Scott Gammons (District 8), Tony Boles (District 12), Ron Morey (District 14), Benton Bartley (District 19) and Rosetta Driver (District 20).
Four incumbent commissioners were challenged but won.
Larry B. Tucker (166 votes) beat Warren Carver (99) in District 9.
Ronnie McDuffee (144 votes) beat Ray Amalfitano (77) in District 15.
Helen Hesson (258 votes) beat Bruce Dyer (177) in District 16.
Wendell Jones (168 votes) beat Tommy Napier (128) and Dewayne Mee (11) in District 17.
The remaining seats will be filled with new faces, as seven seats were vacated by commissioners choosing not to seek reelection.
District 1: Shannon Wix won unopposed to replace outgoing Billy Bransford.
District 2: Chris Wix (104 votes) beat David Brewington (49) and Barry Carter (42) to replace outgoing David Crowder.
District 3: Kenneth Witte (96 votes) beat Gary Dell Worrell Jr. (79) to replace outgoing Vernon Biggs.
District 10: Mchelle Phillips won unopposed to replace outgoing Mike East.
District 11: Bryan Carter (101 votes) beat Timothy Keith (63) to replace outgoing Ralph Doss.
District 13: Anthony Bullington (158 votes) beat Chris Grant (117) to replace outgoing Annette Looper.
District 18: Dewayne Whittemore won unopposed to replace outgoing Grant Malo.
