Running as an Independent, Linville defeated Democratic challenger Dean Sircy and Independent challenger Malcolm Lane.
A total of 393 votes separated Linville from Sircy.
Linville received 2,510 votes to Sircy's 2,117. Lane got 537.
A self-described conservative person by nature, Linville previously said every decision he made in his first term as county mayor were made with the best interest of the taxpayers in mind.
Linville’s first-term accomplishments included providing health insurance for county employees, assisting in bringing Fleetwood back to Lafayette, new school roofs, upgrading vehicles and equipment for rescue squads, securing a Community Development Block Grant for rural water lines, securing $4 million in financing for a road repaving project, new lights for the Little League baseball fields and a new dog pound, which hasn’t opened yet but is expected to soon.
All those accomplishments were made without raising property taxes.
Linville had to overcome three obstacles in his first term: the downturn in the economy, the tornado in Feb. 2008 and the flood of May 2010.
Linville is married to Gwen Linville. They have two children, Barry and the late Bridgett Linville, as well as two granddaughters, Tara and Kayla.
Linville is the son of the late Britton and Lucille Linville. He is a member of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church and a charter member of the Lafayette Lions Club, among other organizations.
Prior to being elected in 2006, Linville was involved in banking and finance for 35 years.

Shelvy Linville, Mayor of Macon County, commented: "I am anxious for Cobb to get the hatchery and QA facility built for two reasons. It will create much needed jobs for Macon County citizens and secondly put to rest the negative speculation surrounding this project by showing people what Cobb and the business is really about. Cobb is going to be good for our retailers and add to the economic activity of the county."
Cobb has opened an office there and moved the new complex manager, Randy Yates to the region, with Keith Harper appointed hatchery manager. Randy Yates moved his family a year ago and is responsible for overseeing construction and the management of the hatchery facility, and getting the 27 new, two-house farms built by local farmers over the next three years.
Linville is responsible for this and it should be forever remembered. When the chicken feces is an inch deep on the sides of all our roads and Tyson makes Lafayette just like another Shelbyville mess, it should always be remembered that we now have a "Lyn-VILLE".
