TVA issues Power Supply Alert

January 7, 2014

The coldest temperatures our area has seen in nearly 20 years has caused TVA to declare a NERC Energy Emergency Alert 2 (EEA 2) last night and this morning (Tuesday) due to peak demand of near 32,500 MW. All available power supply resources have been committed and operating reserve requirements cannot be sustained.

TVA has requested the 159 local power companies in the Tennessee Valley, including Tri-County Electric, to identify and implement actions for curtailment of nonessential loads to avoid firm load reduction.

Consumers are urged to voluntarily conserve electricity to the maximum extent possible. In addition to lowering the thermostat on heat pumps, please postpone using electric appliances such as dishwashers, dryers and cooking equipment and turn off any nonessential lights and electrical equipment.

Warmer temperatures are expected Wednesday. Thank you for assisting TriCounty Electric and TVA with electricity conservation during this power supply alert.
