Macon County Board of Education Chair Jeff Harper (left) and Director of Schools Tony Boles (right) discuss approving bid advertisements for various projects at Thursday's school board meeting.

The Macon County Board of Education discussed the possibility of creating a larger cafeteria space at Macon County Junior High and using the existing area for class space and meeting rooms at their meeting on Sept. 13.

"At the junior high, we're looking into relocating the kitchen and cafeteria space," Macon Conty Director of Schools Tony Boles said. "They've mentioned the need for a larger teacher training room."

Cope Architecture Client Manager John Cheney said he plans to present the board with details regarding square footage and estimated costs at its next regular meeting and that the project could wrap up by the end of Christmas break if approved.

"We're doing some preliminary programming and planning," Cheney said. "We've looked at a number of classrooms and spaces at each facility. The new cafeteria space would be open for community use as well."

Macon County Junior High Principal Jamie Kelley also said that the school often serves as a community hub and that having a space focused on providing that could be helpful.

MCJHS faculty and staff members in attendance noted that having a larger cafeteria space would ease crowding at lunchtime and streamline the serving process. The current cafeteria holds 300 students, while projections for a new space estimate 450.

Among other items in new business, the board approved motions to adopt a series of policies governing charter schools in the event one is established in the school district.

"We discussed this among superintendents at a recent conference," Boles said. "They don't like the idea of the possibility of charter schools in our districts, but they understand the importance of having a governing system in place just in case."

Board members Jeff Harper and Bryan Nichols were also approved for re-election as chair and vice chair, respectively.

"I think things are going particularly well," board member Rebekah Tuttle said. "The whole board endeavor takes a lot of time. But those positions do even more, and we thank them for their service."

Among other items in old business, the board approved bids for new dishwashers at Central Elementary School (approximately $27,000) and at MCJHS (approximately $31,000).

All items listed on the agenda were approved at the meeting.
